In this first article we start with the essentials: general tips for any player. If you’re new, or you just want a refresher, these are the pillars of owning the table.

Shuffle with energy
Mix the tiles face down and thoroughly. Don’t let anyone see your hand early!

Lay them out correctly
Doubles always horizontal. Non-doubles vertical, highest number facing you. It avoids confusion and it’s the official rule.

Match precisely
Join only on open numbers. Remember: a tile touched is a tile played. Think before you touch.

Pass clearly
If you can’t play, say “pass” clearly and without drama. It gives your opponent information, so use it strategically.

Hold your doubles
They’re key to blocking or closing a line. Don’t spend them early.

Count the numbers
Keep a mental note of which tiles have been played. If a number is running short, save yours for the endgame.

Play as a team
With your partner: block the opponent and open for your teammate. Communicate through your moves, subtly.

Table etiquette
Full respect: quiet when it’s someone’s turn, a light tap, no phones and no signals.

How you win
Play your last tile, or hold the fewest points when the game is blocked. Matches to 100/200 points — first there wins!

Join one of our events, whatever your level of experience. Every game is a chance to learn and improve. Practice makes the player!
